My formulating journey.

Here is my latest article for The School of Aromatic Studies and a little bit about my botanical skin care formulating journey.

‘We often hear from botanical skin care formulators that they decided to formulate because of their personal skin problems and because they couldn’t find products that worked. My story is a little different.

My holistic skin care practice began many years ago working with a commercial organic skin care brand in my treatment room. At the time, working with an organic brand and with a holistic approach was already radical enough never mind formulating a micro batch botanical line... ‘continue reading HERE

Your love keeps me going!

It’s true, your love does keep me going! Whenever doubt creeps in, in some miraculous way loving words of encouragement arrive in my mailbox. And such was today when I opened the newsletter from Sonja Payette.

Sonja is a Real Estate Professional and a damn good one! She is in the top 1% in Canada! Here is her website She has been a client for many years and I’ve always enjoyed her visits and her vivacious energy and generous spirit! I was very humbled to read her kind words and find Woman Divine featured in her newsletter. Thank you very much Sonja! I can’t wait until we can have our facial again!

I will be honest, it hasn’t been easy to function as a small business for the past two years. Sometimes, I have moments when I feel discouraged and unsure how to move ahead. I miss my clients and I miss our meaningful interactions very very much! At the same time, it feels completely unsafe to invest in a new location as lockdowns and intense measures continue.

So, I am not sure how my work and my business will evolve over time but I can tell you that I will not give up! I will keep on making my products and I will keep on envisioning a beautiful future for all of us! I will hold a vision for in-person services and a perfect future setup for Woman Divine:)

A few thoughts on the concept of stagnation.

As skin care professionals, we are usually interested in the topic of stagnation as it relates to tissue congestion and toxicity. Stagnation, or lack of proper flow, is often the cause of deterioration, premature aging and all sorts of skin/facial tissue problems. So in our product formulation and facial treatment applications, we are always searching for ways to bring more flow and more aliveness to the skin and tissues which support it.

However today,  I want to focus on a different type of stagnation - the stagnation in one’s skin care practice, when you end up doing the same thing, the same way every single day without giving it any thought.

The most undesirable aspect of a stagnant skin care practice is that it lacks presence and has become purely mechanical. You sort of become like a robot… going through the motions every time you do it. Sadly, even the nicest organic skin care products on the planet will not makeup for your disconnect.

Since living on automatic pilot is not the most joyous, engaging or present way to be, your skin care practice may be one way to help you snap out of it and improve your skin health at the same time.

Sure, having a set skin care practice can feel desirable. It can feel like it is well-planned, well-organized and fits perfectly into our schedule. It may also feel good because it doesn’t require additional thinking. You can just do it and be done with it.

But we are a living, breathing being which is dynamic in nature. Our sophisticated physical system constantly adjusts and fine tunes in relation to the environment we are in, our emotional and mental state, the food that we eat and so on. It continuously communicates, letting us know how we are doing. And it sends us messages when our attention is needed.  A message may look something like this: your skin suddenly looks and feels irritated, your skin feels way more tight today, a painful pimple on my chin yet again, the product I just applied didn’t feel right, the area around my eyes looks unusually dehydrated.

If you have mastered the automatic pilot motion in your skin care practice, you may not notice any of the messaging until these become chronic issues and even then it takes a while for some to notice.

In my 25+ years of practice, I have met many wonderful women who were completely unaware that their skin was inflamed and very red. It was puzzling for me how could a person not realize that their skin was on fire? But I know now that all of us have our blind spots and what is obvious to others may be totally out of our peripheral.

I am not asking you for some elaborate new way to go about your skin care. Simply observe, feel and admire regularly:) When you notice a new skin behaviour, adjust your routine. Maybe a little more of this and a little less of that is all that’s needed. Or maybe you need to cut that red wine out. Or maybe it’s your job…

In the world of smart phones, smart cities and supposed connection to everything and everyone, we find ourselves the least connected to what matters most - our true selves. Asking ourselves to be fully present for 5min every night while we tend to our skin, sounds weirdly demanding and difficult.

We have strayed so far away from ourselves, so probably baby steps are the way back. Are you willing to commit to 5 minutes of full presence while you take care of your skin each night?

Things may look a little different from time to time:)

I want to give you heads up regarding slight inconsistencies in our packaging that you may notice from time to time in the coming months.

The supply chain disruptions are real and we are having challenges sourcing some of our usual jars and bottles:(

As an example I never wanted to use pumps with our oil bottles. I like to keep packaging as minimal as possible. But, we were unable to find 250ml bottles without pumps. For real! So we bought some to tide us over until we can replenish our supplies with what we really want.

I was thinking that maybe you can find another use for the bottle with the pump after you are done with your oil? For example, it could make a nice liquid soap dispenser. Just an idea to consider before you toss it out🙂

We also couldn’t find our regular amber glass 100ml jars and had to (hopefully) temporarily replace them with clear 120ml jars.

In the big scope of life, these are little things and it looks like all of us will want to learn to be ok with less choice and not being able to find things that we like.

Since I’m a bit of a perfectionist, it was challenging at first to be flexible with having to present my products to you in a different way than initially intended. Funny how we can be stuck on little things. Always learning about myself:) But at the end I reminded myself that real treasure lives is in the bottle and it’s not the bottle itself.

So I’ll continue creating healing skin care formulas for you as always with love and deep gratitude. Pumps or not:)

Have a lovely week❤️

Facial compressing

A little reminder:) Your nightly skin care ritual during colder months can be greatly enhanced by the simple and oh so lovely process of warm facial compressing. I enjoy this practice very much! When a warm herbal compress envelopes your face you will notice the natural reflex to deepen and slow down your breath. Your mind / body is invited to relax and let go of the remains of your day.

WomanDivine2018-59 copy.jpg

Facial compressing is an important step in your cleansing practice and provides valuable benefits for the skin.

It relaxes your skin and facial tissues, opens up skin pores preparing them for deeper cleansing and can encourage better flow of lymph … It’s relaxing, soothing and you’ll love it!

You can simply incorporate it into your oil cleansing or you can make it extra special by preparing a herbal skin compressing tea. For example:

* Rose petals will benefit every skin type

* Calendula - sensitive & combination skin

* Marshmallow - dry skin

* Rosemary - oily skin

Make sure to use a soft cloth and if your skin is prone to redness and sensitivity keep the water temperature mild.

If you don’t have a nice facial cloth yet, ours is hand made with multilayered cotton gauze. Perfectly shaped to envelope your face and to gently remove impurities from the surface of your skin. It’s a little thing but it totally elevates your cleansing experience.

Eye Balm | arnica + blue tansy

C586F9FB-F85F-45B8-8850-85083100418A.jpg

The aromatic chemical compound Chamazulene present in Blue tansy (Tanacetum Annum) essential oil, gives the beautiful blue hue to Woman Divine Eye Balm.

Besides its stunning deep blue colour and beautiful sweet, apple like aroma, Blue tansy essential oil is a rather impressive skin healer.

I included it in WD Eye Balm because it’s cooling and soothing, it reduces inflammation and helps to alleviate dark circles (I paired it with Arnica to help lighten darkness around the eyes).

The aroma of Blue tansy has a similar effect on the mind and spirit as it’s oil has on the skin. It’s soothing and calming and it helps to let go of the heated emotions that we experience.

I love making and using this formula very much!
It was created with the intention to address dehydration, fine lines, dark circles, and also to uplift your spirit.
My wish is that its texture, colour and aroma will invite a deeper connection with the self and healing plants every time you apply it.

Love and Light,

Magdalena

Saying goodbye to 363 Churchill.

Big thank you to our local artist Victoria Dark @victoriadark_illustrations for her talent and for creating this precious piece of art! I will always keep it dear to my heart

Big thank you to our local artist Victoria Dark @victoriadark_illustrations for her talent and for creating this precious piece of art! I will always keep it dear to my heart

On June 30th we said goodbye to our beautiful little studio at 363 Churchill.

This certainly is not what we’ve planned when we first got our little building in Westboro. We truly felt that it was going to be a forever home for WD Skin Care. And we loved our bright and peaceful space very very much! But hey, life is full of surprises as we’ve been learning over the past fifteen months.

Since it’s been fifteen months straight that we’re unable to see our clients in person, after much consideration and many tears we’ve decided to go with the flow, practice non-attachment and transition. Not an easy decision but it feels like a good one.

We’ll of course continue with our consultations and product formulating and we have a few new products on the horizon:) So nothing will change in that aspect of our offerings.

Our treatments however will begin only when there are no more lockdowns and we can open for good. We hope that this will happen in not too long because we miss you very much!

Like for every small business in Ontario, this past fifteen months has been challenging in so many ways. And it’s no longer sustainable to keep on waiting and hoping that we can open soon.

When there will be clarity and we’ll get a green light, we’ll set up the most beautiful space to welcome you back to our treatments again.

For now we will be moving into a transitional space (a minute away from where we are) which will allow us to continue with our skin care formulation and production.

We want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your continuous support and loving messages that you send us.
We could not be here without you! Since we never qualified for any government support, it is 100% thanks to you, that we are in business. We are looking forward to growing in new ways and bringing more meaning, more beauty and more health into your life!

Cleansing, mindfulness and tending to the garden of your skin.

Here is a tiny excerpt from my latest article for The School for Aromatic Studies.

‘From the way we are taught about our skin at school, to the way we are encouraged to care for it, it is obvious that our relationship with our skin has become very mechanical. No attention is given to the innate wisdom of the skin or the life which pulsates within it.’ Continue ridding HERE

I hope that you will enjoy it:)

How to make nut milk.

You may not know this but I have completed a holistic nutrition program back in the nineties.

Nutrition has always been a fundamental part of how I understand skin health. That’s why my clients always hear me talk about the importance of improving their diets.

I know that there are many different opinions on eating dairy products. But one thing for sure is that in some cases, today’s grocery store purchased dairy causes systemic havoc and often expresses itself through skin symptoms like dermatitis, acne or eczema.

74E71220-A8DC-4163-8A76-55F23A8DB132.jpg

Personally I have had my own share of dairy related issues and my baby girl was born with eczema behind her tiny ears. This prompted me to explore NUT MILK MAKING. I was in search of a nutritious drink for my family which would replace cow’s milk.

I know that you can buy a selection of nut milks in the store but I feel that nothing compares to making your own fresh and exactly the way you want it.

Nut milks are nutritionally amazing and packed with protein, unsaturated fats, vitamins and minerals. On top of that, when you make your own you can enhance it nutritionally with other natural foods like cocoa, carob powder, dry or fresh fruit. You can also flavour it with a drizzle of maple syrup, raw honey or vanilla.

If you want to go even more fancy you can fortify your nut milk with flaxseed, bee pollen, slippery elm or carob powder. The possibilities are limitless:)

The most exciting part of making your own NUT MILKS is that you will know exactly what you are feeding your body, you can create the most delicious drinks, and you will literally take your health in your own hands.

When we prepare our food from scratch we develop a deeper connection with and a deeper gratitude for how the earth sustains our life.

THIS IS HOW TO MAKE YOUR NUT MILK

What you need to know before you set out to make your milk is that nuts and seeds can go rancid and it is very important to make sure that yours are fresh and organic. Rancid oil within the nuts or seeds is very unhealthy and you will know right away when you bite into the nuts. Rancid will taste awful and bitter.

I always taste the nuts and seeds before I buy them and I always buy bulk. I know that we are not supposed to do this in the store but organic nuts can be very pricy so I give myself permission to do the tasting. Thus far, I never got caught:) I buy mine in the health food store and I usually store them in a mason jar in the fridge.

To make your nut milk you will need: nuts, purified water, a nut milk bag (you will find it at the health food store) and a good blender. I love the Vitamix and have been using one for the past 30 years.

I have many recipes that I like but a simple single nut milk is always a great way to start. I like to use raw almonds, pecans, cashews or walnuts.

IMG_7038.jpeg

1. Place 1 cup of your favourite nuts in a glass container. Cover with purified water and soak overnight or for 8 hours.

IMG_7052.jpeg

2. When ready, rinse the nuts, transfer to a blender and add four cups of purified water.

IMG_7073.jpeg

3. Blend:)

IMG_7107.jpeg
IMG_7114.jpeg

4. Line a glass container or a jar with a nut milk bag and strain the content of your blender. Make sure to squeeze every drop.

IMG_7125.jpeg

5. I like to store my nut milks in mason jars. Refrigerated it will keep for 3-4 days.

You can drink your nut milk cold or hot. Add it to your oatmeal, or smoothie in the morning. You can fortify it with fruit and honey or maple syrup to create lovely sweet tasting dessert-like drinks. Or you can mix nuts with seeds for a nutritionally rich drink.

Nuts are a concentrated source of protein, unsaturated fat, B complex vitamins, vitamin E, calcium, iron, potassium, magnesium, phosphorous and copper.

Seeds are rich in protein, contain B complex vitamins, vitamin A,D,E, phosphorous, calcium, iron, iodine, potassium, magnesium, zinc, unsaturated fatty acids. Sesame seeds are especially high in calcium.

BANANA ALMOND MILK

1 cup of almond milk

1/2 ripe banana

a drizzle of maple syrup

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Blend.

Enjoy!

CHOCOLATE ALMOND MILK

1 cup hot almond milk

1 tsp carob powder

1 tsp cocoa powder

a drizzle of maple syrup or honey

1/4 tsp vanilla extract

Blend.

Enjoy!

Let your creative spirit go and make lots of delicious nut milk recipes. Your body and your skin will thank you!

Since we are on the topic of finding alternatives to cows milk products, I thought that I’ll share with you about my absolutely favourite nut cheese company. To tell you the truth, I didn’t really like nut cheese until I found the Quebec based VEGNATURE. Their fermented cashew cheese is excellent and very delicious!

I hope that you enjoyed this post. HAPPY NUT MILK MAKING TO YOU!

Why you want to eat organic food and drink purified water.

The saying goes: the fish is as healthy as the water it swims in. We have difficulty transferring the essence of this fundamental wisdom of nature to our experience of life.

IMG_1323.jpg

I can share with you that in my own life, over the years, I have been often referred to as granola, overly sensitive, paranoid…  by people that I know or even by my own family members for my choice to eat organic vegetarian food and for purifying my water before drinking it. To tell the truth at times I felt lonely in my pursuit and during my visits with family both in Poland and in Canada I felt pressured (by well meaning people) to step off the path and join the party. There were times when I gave in and there were times when I stood strong.

Today, as a mature human I no longer succumb to outside pressures and I just do my thing. A good water filter stands in my kitchen and I use only filtered water for both drinking and cooking and I shop for my food at the health food store and from local organic farmers in season.

Yes, it is expensive if I compare my grocery bill to a potential grocery bill from Walmart or Costco but when we look at it closely it may be not so.

Let’s go back to the fish and its health depending on the health of the water it swims in. No person in their right mind would argue this! So why are we so bent on defending pesticide and herbicide sprayed food and why are we willing to ingest it and feed it to our children? Seriously, why?

Corporate agriculture has removed the human and human health from nature’s web of support which it readily provides.

Monoculture and fields of soy, corn… are not the natural way life grows in the soil of this planet that we call home. This in itself creates major problems for our health and future food supply.

Diversity is key in creating a healthy environment. Naturally a multitude of plant varieties choose to live close together for mutual support and vitality and at the same they attract other creatures of nature to commune with them. This is when life flourishes!

Lack of diversity spells trouble from the get go. Monoculture introduced by corporate agriculture is destroying our world. Literally! Because growing the same individual plant on the same piece of land year after year is completely unnatural. Problems with pests and unwanted weeds follow. As a remedy toxic pesticides and herbicides are used on crops which then permeate the soil and enter and poison our water systems. And of course genetically modified seeds are created in the lab so they can resist and survive all the poison that is sprayed on them.

Genetically modifying seed is so prevalent today that even some organic foods come from the GMO seed.

The assault of corporate agriculture (and it is an assault) on our soil and food results in a completely depleted soil, void of vital micro-elements and micro-nutrients, nutrient-void food and general destruction of life supporting ecosystems. Our soil, water and air have been poisoned to the degree where we can no longer escape from it and our bodies and minds are feeling it. We have now become like that fish that lives in a very unhealthy water.

This is a very sad state of affairs for humanity and for those of us who honour the sanctity of nature’s creation and design and believe in human life as an integral part of nature.

I can tell you that at times I feel a complete lack of hope. But then I look at all the young people: I look at my daughter and her baby and I get energized to act and to know that I can never give up.

So what can we do to transform this mess into a thriving, health-supporting, loving planet again?

First things first, STOP SUPPORTING THE SYSTEM WHICH IS DESTROYING YOUR LIFE!

  • Stop shopping for convenience and instead shop for a better future.

  • Buy food from organic growers. Because it offers high nutritional value, you will need less. Organic growers work hard, understand and support biodiversity. They are the true keepers of healthy soil, healthy plants and healthy humans.

  • Shop local as much as you can. Small organic growers in your area need your support. The more we buy, the more they grow and hopefully organic food one day can become accessible to everyone.

  • Never waste food. Compost what you can and feed your garden soil or your potted plants with it.

  • Filter your water before you drink or cook with it.

  • If possible put a filtration system on your home water (I am still working on it)

  • Don’t waste water. Use a cup of water to brush your teeth… don’t let the tap run like crazy while you do it.

  • Don’t spray your lawn for God’s sake! It makes your grass ‘perfect’ but it’s poison.

  • Read, educate yourself and find likeminded people. Always stronger together:)

  • Talk to plants:) Hug trees:)

  • Always remember that how you choose to live actually makes a difference.

  • IF YOU CAN GROW YOUR OWN FOOD!

Look, these are simple suggestions and I know that my explanations are also simplistic but I trust that you’ll get it.

If you are interested to deepen your knowledge on this subject you can find tons of info online.

I believe that this is a very urgent matter. As we are seeing government and corporate consolidation taking place right in front of our eyes, one thing becomes clear - we are on our own! People in power are looking out for other people in power. Corporate greed rules and the well-being of humanity is at the bottom of the list. If you think that what I’m saying is nonsense please take a moment and explain to me why our governing bodies support the use of glyphosate in our food growing practices and forestry? Even though Monsanto (now Bayer) have been ordered by courts to pay out billions for causing cancer, Health Canada still says that it is ok to use it.

If this doesn’t speak to you, then I wish you good luck. You are a free being after all.

For those of us who see what’s taking place, we’ve got lots of work to do people. Don’t just sit and watch. Do whatever you can!  You are more powerful than you know!
